Web analytics: page views, visits, time on site

Under “Web analytics” you see, on every plan, how many page views, visits and visitors your website has, how long visitors stay active and how many leave right away. You can view it per day or, for periods of up to 14 days, per hour, split by channel, page and technology. Only visitors who consented to analytics are counted; nothing is extrapolated.

What does web analytics in Metrunio show me?

How many people were in the shop yesterday, and how long did they look around? Web analytics answers that, from the same script that measures the contacts before your orders. You do not need a second installation, and it is part of every plan, including the free Start plan.

What the tabs show

TabWhat you see
OverviewFive tiles: page views, visits, visitors, time on site and bounce rate, each next to the previous period. Below them the trend per day or per hour, visits by hour of day and a table per channel. Each row takes you to the attribution of exactly this channel: the breakdown under “Channels & attribution” is then narrowed to it, and under “Channel” you pick another one or all of them.
SourcesChannel, source and campaign, expandable, with the same columns.
PagesThe most viewed pages, the landing pages and the exit pages, each with views, visits, time on site and exit rate.
TechnologyDevice, browser and operating system as shares.
PathsThe most common routes from a landing page to the next pages.
Real timeThe visits of the last 30 minutes, refreshed every minute.

At the top you choose website, period and channel; the selection applies to all tabs.

The terms

TermMeaning
Page viewA page that was opened, including a page change in a single-page app. Test data and detected bots are not counted.
VisitEverything a browser does on your website without a break of more than 30 minutes. If someone comes back through a new campaign, a new visit starts.
VisitorA browser with its random identifier in the selected period. The same person on phone and laptop counts as two visitors.
Active timeThe time the page was open in a visible tab, at most 30 minutes per page. A tab in the background does not count.
Time on siteThe average active time per visit; the table shows the median next to it.
Engaged visitA visit with at least 10 seconds of active time, at least two page views or a conversion.
Bounce rateThe share of visits that were not engaged.
Landing page, exit pageThe first and the last page of a visit, without the query part of the address and without identifiers (see below).
Exit rateThe share of a page’s views after which the visit ended.

The channel, source and campaign of a visit come from its first event, by the same rule as the contacts in the journey.

Per day or per hour

You can view periods of up to 14 days per hour. If you choose a longer period, the trend shows days and the switch for hours is greyed out. Days and hours run in your account’s time zone.

Only with consent

Web analytics counts what the script sends after consent to analytics. Anyone who declines is in none of these figures, and Metrunio does not add them back in. That is why the top of the section says “Measured for visitors with consent”, together with how many events in the period were not recorded for lack of consent. For days before this count existed, the figure is missing; it is not a zero.

The first page view of a visit is created on consent, not when the page loads. Before that the script does not read the address for measurement; it only checks whether it carries a check link. If a single-page app changes pages before the decision, that change is therefore not counted on its own.

For consent to cover web analytics, your banner has to name it as a purpose: use of the website, page views and visits, and time with the tab visible. If your text has so far only named advertising success, add it and obtain consent again. The matching block for your privacy policy is in the article “Privacy policy text block: measurement and web analytics”.

Time on site comes from a short signal the script sends every 15 seconds while the page is visible, and once when the visitor leaves. It carries only the session, the page and the time, does not count against your event quota and is not stored as a separate event. Until the updated script sends data, time on site stays empty.

Identifiers in addresses and excluded pages

Some addresses name more than a page: an order number, a customer account, an email address. Before Metrunio stores a page, it replaces such parts with :id. /account/orders/100234 becomes /account/orders/:id, and all order pages share one row. Metrunio does not store the query part after the question mark at all. Since 18 October 2026 the same rules apply to the stored events themselves, and so to journeys too.

  • After terms for order, account, checkout, invoice, cart, booking or order confirmation, in German, English, Spanish and French (bestellung, order, pedido, commande, konto, account, checkout, danke, thank-you, gracias, merci and more), any following part containing digits is replaced, including prefixes and hyphens. /order/10001, /order/KS-261019-027 and /order/DEMO-MVFE5428 become /order/:id. So do numbers entirely in capitals with at least eight letters, such as /order/DEMO-MVFEYGQN.
  • A descriptive name with a number stays a page even after such a term: /tickets/concert-2026 and /checkout/step-2 stay as they are.
  • Replaced everywhere: UUIDs, long hex strings, digit sequences of eight or more, codes of capital letters and digits with eight characters or more (MVFE5428), random-looking keys and anything that looks like an email address, encoded or not.
  • Product pages stay as they are: /coffee-1kg, /flour/spelt-flour-630 and /p/48211 are pages of their own. That is why Metrunio does not treat shorter numbers without an order term in front of them as identifiers. An article number entirely in capitals such as /p/AB123456, on the other hand, becomes :id because it looks like an order number.
  • The rules recognise identifiers by their shape, not their meaning. A number that looks like a word (/order/summer) or an order page without an order term in its path (/s/4711) stays as it is. You exclude such pages yourself, as described below.
  • Until 19 October 2026, order numbers with a prefix such as DEMO-MVFE5428 stayed in place. Metrunio cleans stored addresses, page views, entry and exit pages by the new rule over the following week, merging each day's pages into one row.
  • Metrunio does not store page titles, neither in web analytics nor with the events, because a title such as “Your order 100234” can name what the address no longer does.

For anything these rules do not catch, you exclude pages yourself: under “Setup” in the section “Excluded pages”, one path per line, at most 50. /clinic/appointments also excludes /clinic/appointments/tomorrow, but not /clinic/appointments-faq; a * stands for any part between two slashes. An entry matches the address as it appears in the browser and the cleaned one: /order/4711 excludes exactly this order page, /order/:id all of them.

For an excluded page, Metrunio stores only your domain and /:ausgeschlossen, never the address. This applies everywhere: in web analytics, in journeys, in exports and in reports to ad platforms such as Meta. In web analytics the visit to the page does not become a page view; the visit itself still counts, so visits and visitors stay correct. What happens on the page stays: a purchase or enquiry there counts and is attributed like any other.

Add pages that say more about a person than about your website, such as appointment bookings or account pages. An exclusion applies to new visits after one minute at most. Addresses that are already stored are replaced by Metrunio over the following week. Page views that web analytics has already counted stay until the end of the retention period.

Caution

On pages whose visit would reveal special categories of personal data under Art. 9 GDPR, such as health, counselling or faith, you do not embed the measurement script, and you do not report any events from them through the server API either. An excluded path only replaces the page address; it does not prevent an event from being processed.

Note

The rules recognise common forms of identifiers, not every possible one. If your website writes names or other details about a person into its addresses, exclude those pages.

When you erase a person’s data on request, or they object or withdraw their consent, their visits go immediately. Metrunio then recalculates the hourly and daily totals without these visits within a few minutes.

What web analytics does not show

  • There are no heatmaps, no mouse movement and no session recordings. What happened during a visit is shown in a journey’s visit history, as the sequence of reported events.
  • Countries are still to come. Until then, the “Technology” tab shows device, browser and operating system.
  • There is no page funnel built from pages you define and no search terms from your shop search. Funnel steps your code reports are evaluated in the funnel report.
  • Visits and daily figures are kept as long as your account’s journeys, the hourly figures for 15 days.

In the chat you can ask about the same figures on every plan, through MCP from Pro and through the read API from Growth.

  • What is a bounce?

When does a visit count as a bounce?

A visit is a bounce when it was not engaged: less than 10 seconds of active time, only one page view and no conversion. The bounce rate is the share of these visits among all visits in the period, counted for visitors who consented to analytics.

  • Why do I see fewer visits than in GA4?

Why does Metrunio show fewer visits than Google Analytics?

Usually because of consent: Metrunio only counts visits from people who consented to analytics and does not add the others back in. In advanced Consent Mode, GA4 can send cookieless measurements without consent and, above a minimum amount of data, model the behaviour of those who decline. Detected bots, test data and small differences in the terms add to this.

  • How does Metrunio differ from web analytics?

We already have Google Analytics. Why add Metrunio?

Metrunio has its own web analytics with page views, visits, time on site and bounce rate, counted for visitors with consent; it does not have funnels built from pages, search terms or modelled figures for visitors without consent, as GA4 offers them. Beyond that, Metrunio measures the delivery and viewability of creatives in supported environments itself and connects them traceably with the conversion. From the Pro plan it shows two models compared head to head and all seven in one table, along with the individual conversions and journeys behind them.

  • Can I trace what someone did in my shop?

How do I see which pages someone viewed, even if the visit did not end in a purchase?

Every journey’s timeline shows it: each visit with its measured steps, with or without a conversion. Products viewed, cart, form, checkout and purchase stand in the sequence, and the pages viewed expand on the visit. In the journey list, “Without conversion” and “Cart without purchase” find exactly those visits.

  • When does a day start in the reports?

Which time zone do reports, the chat and the APIs use?

A day runs from midnight to midnight in your account’s time zone; the default is Europe/Berlin, and you can change it under “Settings”. “The last 7 days” are seven whole calendar days including today, and a custom period includes its last day in full. The same rule applies to the overview, reports, costs, the chat, the MCP server and the read API.

  • What happens without consent?

Is nothing really stored without consent?

By default, Metrunio stores nothing without matching consent, not even a raw event, and the tracking script sends nothing before a decision. One documented case differs: purchases and refunds your server reports without consent count towards measured revenue for revenue reconciliation, with their order number and without browser, customer or advertising identifiers, and are not attributed. After a refusal this only applies with an activated additional instruction. Without consent on the ad side, the click redirect passes on only the campaign, no click ID.

  • What happens before consent?

Can I measure anonymously before consent?

The default is “block_all”: before consent the tracking script records and sends nothing and keeps nothing back, reports from your page included, and neither does the embed code while the script loads; the page view is only created on consent. Before that it only reads its own consent state and, for the check link, the page address. There is no reach measurement without consent: since 18 October 2026 Metrunio counts nothing before the decision, even where the former setting is still stored.

  • Privacy policy text block: measurement and web analytics

What does my privacy policy need to say about measurement with Metrunio?

Your privacy policy describes measurement with Metrunio in a section of its own: the purposes including web analytics, the data processed, consent as the legal basis, Metrunio as processor, the retention period and withdrawal. The block below is a draft with placeholders. Add the modules for the country view, post-purchase question, forms, conversions sent back to ad platforms and the data assistant only if you use them.
